KYLEE MAFI

Fantasy author. Professional daydreamer. Emotionally attached to fictional people.
Kylee Mafi is an aspiring fantasy author with a love for morally gray characters, fiercely independent heroines, complicated loyalties, and stories that leave readers staring at the ceiling long after the final page.
Born and raised in Utah, Kylee has always been drawn to the extraordinary. From ancient magic and forgotten gods to dragons, dangerous bargains, and worlds beyond our own, she believes the best stories are the ones that make the impossible feel real.
Her love of storytelling is rooted in a lifelong obsession with fantasy literature and the belief that fictional worlds can become just as meaningful as the real one. She is particularly fond of found families, slow-burn romances, sharp-tongued characters, and the kind of heartbreak that makes a happy ending feel earned.
Kylee is currently working on The Aetherwyn Project, her debut adult fantasy novel, a story of ancient gods, divided kingdoms, dangerous magic, and the people caught between them. She is also the author of Until the Stars Burn Out, an ongoing Harry Potter fanfiction exploring love, espionage, sacrifice, and the blurred lines between heroism and betrayal.
When she isn't writing, Kylee can usually be found with a fantasy novel in hand, a cup of coffee nearby, and approximately seventeen fictional conversations happening in her head. She enjoys exploring the mountains of Utah, spending time with her wife and their two dogs, and finding new ways to make her favorite characters suffer.
Above all, Kylee writes about the things that make us human, even in worlds filled with magic: love, grief, loyalty, survival, and the courage it takes to choose who we want to become.
And while her characters might disagree, she firmly believes every story deserves a little hope.

The Creative Process

Every story begins with a question. Usually an inconvenient one that keeps me awake long after I should have gone to sleep.
My writing process is a mixture of imagination, carefully constructed worlds, emotionally complicated characters, and an alarming amount of coffee.
I don't always write stories in a straight line. Sometimes a single conversation inspires an entire chapter. Sometimes a character makes a decision I never planned for. And sometimes I write seventy thousand words only to realize the story deserves to be told differently.
For me, writing is about discovering the people who inhabit these worlds just as much as it is about creating them.
I love stories filled with ancient magic, impossible choices, fierce loyalty, found families, and characters who are neither entirely good nor entirely evil. I believe the most memorable stories aren't necessarily the ones where everyone survives, but the ones where every sacrifice means something.
My desk is rarely organized, my characters are rarely cooperative, and my imagination has absolutely no concept of reasonable working hours.
But somewhere in the chaos, a story begins to take shape.
And that's my favorite part.
