Until the Stars Burn Out: A New Name for an Old Love
There is something bittersweet about saying goodbye to a name that has followed you through so many chapters. When I first began writing Darling, We Were Never Friends, I had no idea what it would become.
I had a girl named Marigold Longbottom, a rather complicated Draco Malfoy, a collection of Slytherins with questionable decision-making skills, and a story that refused to stay within the boundaries I'd originally imagined for it.
What I didn't have was any idea that thousands of people would one day be reading it. And here we are.
Over ten thousand readers have found their way into Goldie's world. You've laughed with her, cried with her, watched her make decisions that have probably taken several years off your lives, and somehow continued showing up for more.
You've fallen in love with characters I once thought would exist only in my imagination. For that, I don't think I'll ever have the right words to thank you.
But somewhere along the way, the story began to outgrow its name. Darling, We Were Never Friends was the title that started everything. It belonged to the beginning, to the sharp edges of unfamiliar relationships, to the tension between people who hadn't yet learned what they might mean to one another. And I will always love it for that.
But Goldie's story has become something much bigger. It's about love, certainly, but also loyalty. Sacrifice. Friendship. The terrible things we do to protect the people we love, and the beautiful, devastating consequences of loving them anyway. It's about the family we choose, the promises we make, and the lengths we're willing to go to keep them. And somewhere between the late-night writing sessions, the heartbreak, the laughter, and a certain silver-haired Slytherin, I found a name that felt like it had been waiting for this story all along.
Until the Stars Burn Out.
Those words have followed me through this journey. They've found their way into the story itself, into the little promises my characters make, and into the way I sign my letters to you. And now, they're becoming the name of the story that brought us all together.
So, yes. It's official.
Darling, We Were Never Friends is becoming Until the Stars Burn Out.
The title is changing. The heart of the story isn't. Goldie is still Goldie. Draco is still Draco. Theodore is still going to have an attitude problem, and Barnaby is still, unfortunately for his father, a beloved member of the family. The Bastard Squad will continue being a collective threat to everyone's sanity. And I will continue putting these poor fictional people through entirely unreasonable amounts of emotional distress. Some things are sacred.
This change also marks the beginning of something else: my very own author website. Welcome to kyleemafi.com, and to The Writer's Desk, where I'll be sharing updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses, announcements, and the occasional rambling thoughts of a writer who spends far too much time living inside fictional worlds.
For those of you who have followed me from the earliest chapters, thank you for growing alongside this story.
For those who have only recently discovered Goldie, welcome to the chaos.
And for everyone who has ever left a comment, voted on a chapter, shared a theory, or stayed up far too late reading just one more page, thank you for making this journey something I never could have imagined.
We're not starting over. We're turning the page. And I cannot wait to show you what comes next.

With a new name comes a new cover. One filled with little pieces of the story I've come to love so dearly. Marigolds bloom across its pages, a quiet tribute to the girl at the heart of it all, while the constellation Draco rests among the stars, just off to the side. Two names, woven into something bigger than themselves. A little bit of Goldie, a little bit of Draco, and a whole lot of love hidden in the details. I hope you love it as much as I do. ♡
Until the stars burn out,
Kylee Mafi ♡
